Top 10 UK Staycation Ideas for Families

With the weather in the UK being so beautiful, there's no need to travel outside our own country for a beautiful holiday with the little ones. From adventure and sandy beaches to quiet countryside, there's something for everyone. Here are some of our favourite spots in the UK for a staycation:

1. Holkham, Norfolk

For unspoiled landscapes and beautiful beaches, Holkham in North Norfolk is among one of the best beaches in the UK. Enjoy surfing at nearby Stiffkey, camping in Waxham or the picturesque Wells-Next-The-Sea along the coastline. Holkham Hall is also a beautiful stately home to enjoy, and also are known to show family films in their outdoor cinema area!

2. Margate, Kent 

With easy access from London, Margate has become popular in recent years for cool shopping, food and entertainment set against the backdrop of a vintage seaside experience. We'd recommend a trip to the Turner Contemporary for a fix of culture, and a trip to the iconic Dreamland for vintage amusements and it's own roller rink! If you are in the area for a few days, you could also easily pop to Broadstairs just along the coast, and enjoy amazing views and seafood! `

3. Frome, Somerset 

Tucked away in Somerset, 20 miles from Bath and Glastonbury respectively, Frome is a gorgeous market town that makes a perfect base for a staycation. Cobbled Catherine Hill is home to so many independent shops and restaurants for everyone to enjoy. Around a 40 minute drive will also take you to the breathtaking Cheddar Gorge for an unforgettable day out!

4. Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear 

Historic Tynemouth, 20 minutes drive outside of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, is a beautiful coastal staycation idea. From the medieval ruins of The Priory and the beautiful Tynemouth lighthouse, this is perfect for little ones who love history! Around a 30 minute drive can also take you to Beamish Living Museum, an open air museum dedicated to depicting life in the North East in the 18 and 1900's. It even has its own tramway!

5. Isle of Skye, Scotland 

Scotland is the ultimate getaway to truly feel like you're getting away from it all, with stunning rolling landscapes and endless space. From wandering round the picture perfect town of Portree to whale watching boat tours, there's something for everyone in rural Scotland. For hiking and bouldering fans it's also the perfect destination!

6. Portmeirion, North Wales 

North of Snowdonia in Wales, Portmeirion describes itself of a taste of Italy in North Wales. With colourful buildings set in luscious greenery, there's plenty to see in this little hidden gem. Nearby is the beach of Harlech, where you can enjoy views of Snowdonia from the beach! There is also Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways for fans of vintage steam engines in a beautiful Welsh setting.

7. Whitby, North Yorkshire

Home of the Whitby Goth Weekender, the North Yorkshire town is known for more than just a place for people with a penchant for eyeliner. Inspiring Bram Stoker's Dracula, Whitby Abbey ruins are a beautiful historic day out. Nearby, seaside towns of Scarborough and Bridlington can be found, along with a trip to the rolling Yorkshire Moors. Kate Bush impression optional.

8. Bakewell, Derbyshire 

Home of the famous pudding, Bakewell is a quaint market town perfect for foodies and fans of picturesque country walks. Close to many beauty spots and other small towns in Derbyshire, such as Buxton, there are miles of green landscape to explore. Nearby is also the historical Chatsworth House, where the BBCs adaptation of Pride and Prejudice was filmed as Mr Darcy's home of Pemberley.

9. Swanage and The Jurassic Coast, Dorset

With the nearby Durdle Door as a UNESCO world heritage sight, the Jurassic Coast is a must see on the South Coast in Dorset. Swanage is a perfect base for seeing all the nearby attractions such as Lulworth Cove. Breathtaking views and relaxing beaches are the order of the day.

10. Aldeburgh, Suffolk 

Along the beautiful Suffolk coastline, Aldeburgh has long been a favourite staycation destination. Featuring a quaint high street of independent shops and restaurants right on the beach front, it's a perfect peaceful getaway. We'd recommend Two Magpies Bakery for the best picnic treats! You can also travel about half an hour along the coast and pop in on the gorgeous coastal town of Southwold and the village of Walberswick. Ten minutes outside of Aldeburgh you can visit Snape Maltings, an arts complex with restaurants, shops and world renowned art: sculptures in the surroundings feature works by Ryan Gander, Barbra Hepworth and Henry Moore.
