Love Month Challenge Week One: Love Where You Live

The Arctic Cub Hat in Banana Split

Happy February! This month we're celebrating at all things LOVE! From ourselves, our families and the world around us; there's so much to explore and enjoy with little ones to develop and encourage the ways in which we love. Why don't you take part in our four part Love Month, and find the love in everyday life!

For week one of Love Month we're looking at the world around us, for Love Where You Live. This is a great opportunity to encourage little ones to be conscious of their environment, both in their home and in the wider world!

Don't forget this is just a bit of fun, and you can cater these ideas to what works best for you and your little ones. Tag us on social media to show us how you're loving where you live this week!

Wednesday: Prep Day!

Get ready for the week by gathering any bits and bobs you might need for the first Love Week, and talk through all the different things you'll be doing this week. You could discuss what your little ones love about where they live, and what they already think about what it means to love their environment!

Bits and Bobs for Week 1

  • A hot chocolate or other warm drink
  • Gloves
  • Litter picker (if you have one)
  • Rubbish bag
  • A stone
  • Some kids paint or felt tips
  • Blanket
  • Wild seeds
  • Googley stick on eyes or chalk

Take a hot chocolate onto your doorstep and sit and watch the world go by. This also works perfectly out of a window or on a bench outside, whatever works for you! Sit with your little ones and take a while to sit back and take in the everyday goings on outside your home. What can you see? Who lives on your street? Is there a dog with a particularly waggy tail?

This is also a great opportunity to teach an easy mindfulness technique that can benefit both adults and children: when feeling overwhelmed, sit outside and count three things you can see, three things you can feel, and three things you can hear. This, with some calm breathing, gives us a chance to slow down and be mindful of the world around us.

Take the opportunity to make the world around you nicer by doing a litter pick! Either set aside 15 minutes, or you can incorporate it into your walk to school or nursery. If you're with older children, you could discuss recycling and how littering effects nature and wildlife. Don't forget to wear thick gloves and be careful when handling litter!

If you're out and about adventuring, don't forget your hat! Our range of kids and adult hats are perfect for all weathers, with a snuggly Thinsulate lining to keep you warm outdoors! Check out our range of cool kids hats and scarves

How else can you nurture the world around you? There are so many small things that you can do to brighten up your environment. Have you tried painting rocks? Placing a painted rock in a forgotten place can brighten up an environment, and it's a fun and easy crafting activity.

While you're out placing your rock, why not see if any weeds need pulling up or plant some wildflowers? We love this Seedbom from Kabloom, or you can scatter your own wildflower seeds! With flowers that encourage wildlife like bees, you could discuss bees and other wildlife and why it's important to protect them. Bees may not be around much in February, but it will be fun to look out for them in warmer weather and wonder if your wildflowers helped them to pollinate!

Time to see the world from a different angle! Bundle up warm and take a blanket out, and see what your everyday looks like from a different angle. Do you have a bench in the park you always go to? Why not lie down on your tummy and see what can be seen on the ground. Take your blanket and lie down and look at the sky: what can you see when you look at things you haven't before? If it's the day for it (February weather can be fickle), cloud watching is the perfect example of seeing things differently: what faces, animals and objects can you see in the clouds?

Looking for some fun park activities for you and your little ones? Check out our blog here on fun park games and activities!

Have you ever listened to the music of your neighbourhood? Wrap up in your warm clothes and head back out onto your doorstep: on Monday you were looking, and on Friday you're listening! Close your eyes and listen to all the noises around you: the doors closing, the chatter of people around you, a radio playing, or a cat meowing! See if you can recreate any of the noises, and practice your humming and singing. Try it once in the morning and once in the evening: is there a difference in what you can hear? Add in your own sounds to the soundscape of your neighbourhood: can you say hello to a neighbour, or hum a tune?

Being silly is very underrated: add a bit of humour and silliness to where you live to give people a smile. Our favourite are googly eyes: get some googly eyes and see where you can stick them to brighten up your environment! If you put them on your letterbox, does it look like a face? Looking for faces in the everyday is a perfect way of turning your environment on its head to look for the fun around you. Take some chalk with you, and if you see two holes or circles, draw a mouth to make a silly face! Don't forget to show us all your fun outdoor art on social media!

After growing up in the North-west of England, Emma’s love of travel and style saw her career move to London with a fashion + business degree,  first working as a trend researcher then menswear buyer for some of the most famous stores in the UK.

In 2015, having had her first baby she moved to Norwich to explore a family life closer to beaches and the countryside. Becoming a parent she found herself in a world of kidswear that didn’t look good or perform for the type of fresh air fun as a family so she set about creating her own brand. Little Hotdog Watson was born in 2016. The summer and winter hats for kids and adults, jam-packed with innovative protective technology have gone on to win awards, grace the pages of magazines, like Vogue, Grazia, Independent, Mother and Baby and celebrities alike.
